Jefferson Memorial Forest to host a Saturday of Bluegrass music on May 18

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Bluegrass music lovers will want to stop by the Jefferson Memorial Forest on Saturday, May 18 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. for the 9th Annual Forest Fest.

Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) is the presenting sponsor. “There is no better place than the Jefferson Memorial Forest to just kick back enjoy a nice spring afternoon and listen to some great music,” she said. “If you have never been to the forest, this is a perfect chance to experience its beauty and join others who know what a special place it is in Louisville Metro.”

Headlining this year’s Forest Fest ‘13 is Della Mae of Boston, Massachusetts. The five member female band is an up-and-coming band that mixes a contemporary sound with traditional Bluegrass.

Garrison Keillor highlights upcoming season at Iroquois Amphitheater

LOUISVILLE, KY  – Joined on stage by local performers and musicians, concert promoters, and city officials, Mayor Greg Fischer announced a strong lineup of entertainment for the 75th anniversary season at the Iroquois Amphitheater.

Highlights include the popular Garrison Keillor and his “Prairie Home Companion’s” Radio Romance Tour on July 20. Major music acts include Local Natives, Paul Thorn and Jason Isbell, Gregg Allman and the Louisville-based band Houndmouth, opening the season on April 26.

LOUISVILLE, KY – Metro Council recently passed legislation approving $22,750 for activities at Iroquois Amphitheatre, a Metro Parks Facility.  The funds appropriated through the Neighborhood Development Funds allow Metro Parks to put on an outstanding season to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Amphitheater.
The Amphitheater was constructed in the spring of 1938 through the Federal Works Progress Administration.  In the early years national performers took the stage including Rosemary Clooney.

Louisville mayor appoints new Brightside director

LOUISVILLE, KY – Mayor Greg Fischer has announced that Gina O’Brien is the new executive director of Brightside, the Louisville agency that has long spearheaded litter cleanups, landscaping initiatives and environmental youth education.

“Gina has the background and drive to continue Brightside’s great work in the community and lead the organization in some new directions while working closely with our overall environmental team including our Office of Sustainability, the Louisville Tree Advisory Commission and other partners,” Fischer said.

O’Brien had been executive director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Chicago where she managed a staff of 10 people and a budget of nearly $2 million. She joined the organization in 2006 after working in sales and marketing in Chicago and Pittsburgh.

LOUISVILLE, KY – Do you have an idea for a smart-phone app that would improve the city?
Metro Government, in partnership with Code for America, is offering $10,000 in cash prizes for apps or computer coding ideas during a Hack-a-thon scheduled for Saturday, February 23. The event is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LVL1, located at 814 E. Broadway, and is open to all with unique ideas.
